Removing Adobe Acrobat’s PDF extension from Firefox

Something on my system automatically installs an Adobe Acrobat PDF extension into every new browser I load. This is a windows only extension so I don’t need it and it is not possible to remove it from within Firefox. Below are the instruction to remove it. I’m posting it here as I will inevitably need to do it again sometime and others may find it useful.

  1. Go to ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/{select your profile}/extensions.json
  2. Open this file in a text editor (I used Atom)
  3. Search for Acrobat”.
  4. Go to the first entry and select everything within the brackets (this is easy to do with Atom).
  5. Delete
  6. Delete the brackets and comma
  7. Save file
  8. Restart Firefox and check the extensions. Acrobat should now be gone.
